Of pottery

27/08/2007

I think I have mentioned that I am doing a pottery class and am currently working on a mosaic for our chimney. I will have to take some before and after pics I've decided, from grey and boring ie just a chimney to, hopefully, an EXPLOSION of colour!

The weather yesterday was so lovely, it's so encouraging and really helps you get through the rest of Winter – yes, I know there's not much of it left, but warmth and sunlight is different to cold and sunlight!

While the flora of this area is lovely, in Winter it has a tendency to be plain old dark green and that's about it. So I'm looking for winter flowering low maintenance drought tolerant plants to plant and propagate. A fun project! Also, have decided that there will be a lot of mirrors within the chimney mosaic – so in Winter even the slightest hint of sunlight will cause a sparkle!

Of …. whew!

My goodness we have had a busy weekend. But a good weekend!

An hour ago I would have said my heading would be along the lines of … ‘Of … can’t be bothered’ … but I have been footling about online for about an hour now and thought I’d fling a few lines on.

On Saturday, under a cool but interesting sea mist, we build a fence for the backyard. I think it’s almost 100m long, and it’s build out of ‘reo’ – that’s concrete reinforcing wire, large panels 6m x 2.4m, cut in half so 6m x 1.2m … star poles … treated pine poles … 1 gate … lots of leg work etc. In addition to this I burnt, to utter ashes, a HUGE pile of banksia prunings – and when I say huge, I mean HUUGGGEEE – about 6m x 4m x 3m … but I burnt it by starting a smaller pile at the front of the block and dragging it all down and on, so it burnt hot and fast and with a minimum of smoke – 3 hours and it was all mostly done, just larger logs and branches burning down to dust.

So, we finished it, we let the dog off the chain, he ran around like a loon, and loved it – and better yet, he hasn’t escaped!

And he didn’t escape today either … and didn’t bark much! So, at this point, it’s victory!

And he has his little op tomorrow, which may calm him a tad … it should also hopefully stop a visiting lady from calling by, once he loses all his manliness …

Today, we had a beautiful breakfast outside in the see through tent at a local restaurant at Boat Harbour – gorgeous day, gorgeous brekky, just lovely.

We went and put plastic around our camellia (at the block) so the wallabies would leave it alone, poor little tacker.

Then we came back and moved the washing line – a Hills Hoist, so a bit of a job. But it’s done, and two loads of washing are hung out, and can also no longer be seen from the house.

Yes, he is cute, yes, he is only a puppy (14 months) but also yes, he weighs 25kg – and the largest most bluey’s (Blue Heelers) get to is usually 21kg’s max …..

yahoo, it worked, thanks Deeleea, excellent instructions, even if it’s taken me two months to get a moment to actually use them!

More photos will fllow as I get around to organising them into my ‘upload folder’ … have to be that organised otherwise who knows what I’ll put on!

Anyway, that photos is of our Western fence, which runs down the left hand side of our driveway. These are the first of our grevilleas, which will hopefully mature into a nice 2m hedge, thus blocking the view of the neighbour’s house BUT keeping a bit of the tops of their silver birches and our view of Table Cape .. which is a bit more North than this photo.

I will attempt to put in some photos of the big burn at some point, I mentioned it a couple of times before, you can see by the burn scar beside the LandRover Discovery (Mr Tasmania’s third love – behind me and the golf clubs) that it was quite large :)

can I trade a dog in …. for a mouse maybe? Or a hamster? or a nice little blue budgie? Any fair offer will be considered!

So, I get home from work and there’s a chain but no dog …..

The D ring on the end of the chain was there but undone … and the tank valve had been turned on and it was full and overflowing ….

So I called …. and called …. and he answered! From next door’s back deck … the rotten little sod had gotten off the chain (probably my fault, doing up a D ring in the dark!) and had been chasing cars on the road. (pardon me, just going to throw a glass of water in his face … we’re working on stopping random barking at the moment … the water does work, far less stressful than a smack or a rolled up newspaper, but tonight I think he’s going for full immersion – three glasses and counting!).

Anyway, walked him home, got changed, took him for a 45 minute walk around town and along the beach (with a chat to Breeze the Weimaraner and TUesday the failed Dachshund on the way) and gave him his dinner. He’s been giving yips ever since, wants to come in I guess, but that’s not happening until I’ve at least had my dinner!

I am ambivalent about him at the moment … he’s a great dog, and hopefully once we’ve got the back yard he’ll work off a bit of energy running about, and also once he’s had his little op …. but if he needs more room and we haven’t got it mum and dad have offered to have him – one of their dogs is getting quite old and dad likes having two dogs, and they’ve got heaps of room …. I guess once I’ve had dinner I may think differently.

I’ve now put him on the verandah and given him a pig’s ear to chew on … hopefully that’ll keep him quite for a while!

It's odd, I've spent a lot of time living by myself, but only a small part of that time actually by myself and alone. For example, when I was at Uni, I didn't share a room – but I lived in a co-ed dorm of 26, in a building with 9 dorms. In the last house I lived in before I married I lived on the second floor of a 3 story house and was the only one on that floor – but I shared that house with 4 other girls. I've only ever lived by myself alone twice really – once in Moss Vale for 6 months whilst Bro2 and The Amazon lived in New Zealand (and that was in my home area, so doesn't really feel like you're alone when you recognise most of the faces around, work in the area, and your parents are only 15 minutes away), and then for 2.5 years in Harbord, on the Northern Beaches of Sydney (near Manly), where I had a 1 bedroom flat (apartment) in a block of 14.

And now I'm married, so I won't be living by myself and alone ever again (Mr Tasmania and I are both going in our sleep, at the same time, obviously! – or we could be raptured, there's another option – whatever it is, we're both going at the same time!). However, I am home alone (if you don't count the large dog!) for the next two nights. Mr Tasmania is in Hobart for the next couple of days, with 6 teachers and 102 kids (yikes) to compete in the Rock Eisteddfod. Lucky boy, buses full of country kids to whom Burnie is a big city (under 20000 people), teenagers let loose in Hobart, just too much fun J, wouldn't you all love to be teachers?!

Anyway, I'm finding myself a little discombobulated … I have a HUGE list of things I want to get done, so I certainly won't feel as if I've got nothing to do, and it's not as if he hasn't been away before (2 nights in Melbourne etc), but it's a little odd. Or maybe I'm feeling excited that I have a bit of time to myself? I feel a bit guilty that I might be a little excited … but I guess that's silly really, why shouldn't I enjoy some time to myself?

I guess it's just a new situation, as most have been this year, and it'll be easier to just do it and enjoy it, rather than analyse it.

I think that's what I'll do!

We had a fuse blow Tuesday night … or technically, Wednesday morning – EARLY. Good thing husband is organised and electrical [in more ways than one ;) ], so he changed it and we are good to go – and all the stuff in the fridges/freezers did not defrost! The panel heater in the bathroom is cactus however – on plugging it back in we had a big bang, smoke, electrical stench etc … it's off to the heater doctor today.

We have also had issues with His Majesty doing his business near the front door … and me walking in it! Blarg! with extra arg!!!!! The kitchen rug is now outside, to be dealt with on the weekend, Mr Tasmania cleaned the bottom of the ugg boots (it gives me the heaves), and I'll be more careful in future!

And I'm just tired. I think that's my problem at the moment, my year has finally caught up with me. I've had a cold which really has not gone away for 5 weeks – or it mostly went but is now back, so I guess I've finished one and caught another one – and my head is full of cotton wool. I've had a stomach upset and it's still not quite settled. As soon as Mr Tasmania gets out of the car in the morning I yawn all the way to work and could walk in and curl up under my desk and sleep all day quite happily.

I'm bothered, as I'm finding myself just wanting to go home and go to bed and not do things – like our home group tonight – but then I also think as they're my home group they will understand if I'm tired and not 100% … but I don't want to be self – indulgent either …. But I also think my body is giving me signals I shouldn't be ignoring.

What to do, what to do … any suggestions?
